What to plan before you book
Cabling is easiest to get right before the walls are closed.
Where every point goes
Walk the building with a floor plan and mark desks, printers, phones, screens, WiFi access points and cameras. Add spare points in each room: extra cable is cheap during the work and expensive afterwards.
Where the cabinet lives
The network cabinet needs a secure, ventilated space with power, ideally central so cable runs stay within the distances the standards allow. A cupboard that gets hot in summer is a common mistake.
Timing with other trades
In a refurbishment or new build, cabling goes in after first fix and before ceilings and plasterboard are closed. Agreeing the programme with the builder and electrician avoids opening up finished walls.
Links between buildings
Outbuildings, warehouses and separate offices are best linked with fibre, which covers long distances and is not affected by electrical interference. Plan the route, ducting and any groundwork early.
Good to know
Copper or fibre
Copper data cable (Cat6 and similar) serves the points within a building. Fibre carries the backbone between floors, cabinets and buildings, where the distances are longer and the bandwidth needs are greatest.
Testing and labelling
Every cable should be tested once it is terminated, and every outlet and patch panel port labelled to match. Good records make future moves and fault-finding much quicker.
Fire stopping
Where cables pass through fire-rated walls and floors, the holes must be sealed again to restore the fire separation. It is a building regulations matter worth asking about on any job.
Plan for growth
A structured cabling system is meant to outlast the equipment plugged into it. Sizing the cabinet and backbone with room to spare keeps the network scalable.
How it works
- 1
Tell us about the project
Send an enquiry or call with the building, the number of users and what the network needs to carry.
- 2
Network planning and layout
We plan the cabinet position, cable routes and the points each area needs, working around the building and other trades.
- 3
Installation
Cabling, fibre, cabinets and patch panels are installed, terminated and labelled.
- 4
Configuration
Network hardware and software are installed and configured, ready for your devices.
- 5
Handover and support
We hand the network over and stay available to support and extend it as you grow.
Data Cabling Infrastructure: questions customers ask
What is structured cabling?
A planned system of data cables, outlets, patch panels and cabinets that carries a building’s network. Because it is organised and labelled, it is easier to manage, extend and fix than cables added piecemeal.
Do I need fibre or copper cabling?
Usually both. Copper serves desks and devices within a floor, and fibre links cabinets, floors and separate buildings where distances are longer.
Can you work in an occupied office?
Cabling an occupied building is common. The work is planned around how the space is used, and noisy or disruptive parts can be arranged to suit.
Can you upgrade our existing network?
Yes. As well as new installations, we upgrade existing infrastructure, from tidying and re-cabling a cabinet to enterprise-wide network systems.
Do you do residential cabling?
Yes. Our data cabling and infrastructure services are for commercial and residential clients.
How many data points should we have?
As many as the room plan needs plus spares for growth. Adding points during the installation costs far less than coming back to add them later.
