The dish needs an unobstructed view of a wide area of sky. Trees, chimneys and neighbouring buildings cause short dropouts, and trees grow, so the best spot is often higher than people expect: a gable end, a chimney or a pole.
Where the router will live
The dish connects by a single cable to the router, which needs power and should sit centrally to the area it serves. In larger buildings the router feeds a wired network or WiFi access points.
How the cable gets inside
Decide how neatly the cable should enter the building and run inside. Routing through walls, lofts and between buildings is part of the installation, and is easier to agree beforehand.
Permission for the mounting
Most small dishes on a house do not need planning permission, but listed buildings, conservation areas and rented properties can have rules. Check with the planning authority or landlord first.
